Moving Companies - How To Choose A Local Mover

Meet Nancy. She is a no-nonsense career minded woman who has decided to move to Manhattan from Brooklyn. She plans to rent an apartment here primarily to save money and time on commuting. She knows that since her new office is also situated in the heart of Manhattan city, she will be able to cut down on her traveling and shuttling between home and office..

There is only one challenge which lies in her path. She has never moved or relocated before at anytime in her life. May be once, when she was a kid but then, she was too young to know what was going on at that point in time. She knows that when she hires the services of a local New York moving company, she is going to entrust that company with her precious and prized belongings. She just wants to be doubly sure that the local moving company in New York which she chooses is the one which she can trust blindly.

How do we help her make the right decision? Here are some very important pointers for her:

1. She can research various local moving companies in New York through their websites. She can read about their past history and the various kinds of offers they give.

2. She can check with the Better Business Bureau and find out if any grievances or complaints have been filed against the company.

3. She can also check if the local mover in New York belongs to any trade organizations, such as the American Moving & Storage Association or a state movers association.

4. Another important research point which can work to her benefit is to find out if the local mover is registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), of the U.S. Department of Transportation. The website of FMCAS gives a list of only "interstate" companies, meaning those that can move from one state to another. However, you can use an interstate mover, even if you're moving locally within the state.

5. She can check if the New York local company whose services she is going to take has a "dispute settlement" plan in place. This will make reassure her that she will not have any problems with the moving company and even if they do rise, they will be ably resolved.

6. She can contact her friends, neighbors, colleagues and find out if they have had a good or fantastic experience with a particular moving company. Word of mouth publicity is the best publicity for any company.

7. She can check whether the moving is insured or bonded. Highly regarded moving companies whether they are local or interstate, will offer some kind of insurance against damage to her goods or belongings.

8. She should try to get estimates from more than one moving company in New York. This should happen only after she has short-listed some reliable moving companies. She can get a quick estimate on the Internet or simply call up the company for the estimate. A good moving company will always arrange for their representative to come over to her place to see how much share of the belongings can actually be moved. She has to keep the details about the floor of her current residence, the floor of the new residence, the address of her current residence and the address of her new home she will be moving to, ready to get an estimate done. She should let the moving company know if there is a lift or an elevator in either or both of the residences. The other bit of information which a moving company needs is if there is parking space for the moving truck in either or both of the residences. If she lives in apartment which restricts moving hours to certain timings only, then she should let the moving company know about the same also. Nancy can also assume at what hours the traffic would be on the lesser side and instruct the moving company to dispatch the truck accordingly.

New York moving services which do local business charge by the hour only. Like mentioned above in Nancy's case, the circumstances like the floor you presently reside on, the floor you will be moving to, the presence of an elevator on either of the buildings (buildings in affluent areas of New York like Manhattan which has a lot of high rise buildings have elevators in them), the number of luggage and packages that you have and the peak hours of the New York traffic can affect the duration of the move and cause the price for the move to go up also.

Cheap Moving - Tips For Moving On a Budget

Moving is never an easy experience for any of us. Let's face it- most of us have to watch our budget carefully when planning a move. But cheap moving doesn't necessarily mean that you have to sacrifice quality. The key to planning a successful move while saving money is to plan your move ahead. The following tips for moving on a budget are designed to help make your move as smooth as possible without hurting your pocket.

First and foremost, start planning your move well in advance. Decide up-front what your budget will be and make every effort to stick to that budget. If you are traveling by airplane, book your flight and hotel accommodations as soon as possible to get the best fares. If you plan to travel by car, be sure to plan your route wisely and don't forget about the cost of fuel, tolls, meals, and hotels on the road. Some moving expenses that people often forget include: home repairs, rental expenses, pet deposits, storage fees, and tips for moving crews. Create a "moving file" and keep records of all your expenses and receipts. Many moving expenses are tax deductible, so keep good records and check with your accountant to see what can and cannot be deducted.

The first big decision you will need to make when moving on a budget is to decide whether you will hire a moving company, rent a moving truck, or hire a self service moving company. If you don't want to drive a rental truck, self service moving companies or containerized moving companies offer a cost-effective alternative to higher-priced movers. Regardless of how you plan to move, be sure to request multiple quotes and schedule on-site estimates whenever possible as they are the most accurate. Be suspicious of low-ball estimates and be sure to ask for references from the movers.

The next step for a cheap moving experience is to begin packing well in advance. With the exception of large or expensive items that will need special attention from professionals, try to do as much packing on your own as possible. Begin collecting moving supplies and be on the lookout for discounts. If you have a friend or colleague who recently moved, see if they would give or sell you their boxes and leftover supplies. People sometimes sell their used moving supplies and boxes through the classified ads of the local newspaper. Instead of buying bubble wrap, use crumpled newspaper or use your own rugs, blankets, or other linens to pad your breakables.

As your moving day approaches, a great way to make some extra cash is by holding a garage sale. If you plan well and advertise locally, you could make a nice profit which you can use towards paying for the move. A garage sale will help you get rid of unwanted items at a profit while at the same time reducing the number of items you will need to move to your new destination. Take an assessment of your belongings and decide if it's worth the cost of moving them. Donating items to charity is another great way to lighten the load while helping others in need.

Last but not least, don't be afraid to ask friends and family to help you move. You can save money on child care or pet care by asking your friends to lend a helping hand. Recruit "volunteers" to help you on moving day and be sure to provide them with snacks and beverages. A home-cooked meal or a nice thank-you card is a great way to show your friends how much you appreciate their help.

With careful planning and a little creativity, you too can save money on your move. Keep these tips in mind while planning your move and enjoy cheap moving that is efficient and even pleasant.

Moving Tips - How to Find Or Create an Apartment Or House You Love

Since I'm getting ready to move to a new apartment, thought I'd share some thoughts on the process of moving. First off, it's an experience that is sometimes exciting, as I think about the potential places I might move into, but sometimes scary as thoughts go through my mind about, "what if I end up not liking the place?" "Will the neighbors be friendly?" "Will I like the neighborhood?" And, of course, there's the dreaded moving process itself - "how on earth will I pack all this stuff by myself?"

When it comes to choosing a place to live, if you're work is not providing an apartment for you, then you need to put some thought into what you're looking for.

If you are being given an apartment as part of your relocation, then you need to focus more on how to make that place feel like your home, especially if you're living with furniture and artwork that was chosen and purchased by someone else.

Choosing Your Own Place

I feel that it's important to have an idea of what you're looking for. First, figure out  your price. Next, go out and visit some apartments or houses within your budget, just to see what's out there. Personally, I rely on how I feel in an apartment. This is often more important than how it looks. So, figure out how you know you like a place. Does your heart leap? Do you know it because you're inexplicably smiling? Or, is it perhaps the absence of feeling like you want to bolt out of a place as soon as you enter? All of these are important to be aware of as you choose a place to live, because, if you're going to have to come home to it every day, you want it to be a place you look forward to returning to. Take note about the criteria that make you feel most happy.

Here are some items to think about:

  • Space - how big or small do you need each of the rooms to be?

  • Closets - how many things do you need to "hide" in the closet?

  • Location - what areas do you like best and least in the city you're living in?

  • Neighbors - do you like to throw wild parties, or be more subdued? If it's the latter, try and make sure you're not surrounded by college kids, for example.

  • Layout - do you care if the apartment space is "railroad" with one room right after the other in a straight line, or do you have another preference?

  • Light - is it important that there be tons of sunlight streaming into your dwelling, or are you more comfortable in darker surroundings?

  • Direction - do you like to face the busy streets - perhaps enjoying a connection to the world outside, or do you prefer the peace and quiet of an apartment facing a courtyard?

  • Comfort - is it important to have a doorman and elevator, or are you comfortable walking up several flights of stairs?

  • Height - depending what city you live in, you may have the option to live on a high floor, or the first floor - figure out which makes you happier.

  • Security - If you're not looking for, or don't have the option for a doorman/elevator building, familiarize yourself with the security system and entry-way of each potential home you visit, and try to return in the evening, to see if you're comfortable with the surroundings, and feel secure with whatever system is available

  • Proximity to Necessities - if this is an important point, figure out closest laundromats, dry cleaners, shoe repair, and supermarkets

  • Proximity to Nature - if you like spending time in parks, or hiking, etc., you may want to ensure there's a nearby area for you to enjoy nature

Updating a Pre-Furnished Apartment or House

If you're moving into a place chosen for you by your company, you will most likely arrive to a pre-furnished, pre-decorated apartment and have only minimal ability to modify it.

In your case, find out what you are, and are not, allowed to change - whether or not you can, for example, repaint any walls, or hang your own paintings or photos.

Either way, you can most certainly frame your photos in desktop frames that you can place in conspicuous places.

Plants or flowers are a wonderful way to brighten a home, and give you something to care for that you nourish and help grow.

It always makes me laugh - but a shower curtain has a huge impact on a bathroom - every time I've moved, once I put up my very own shower curtain, it makes that small room seem like mine, and it's the first room in a new place that I feel at home in! Maybe it's because I have so many toiletries that I can fill up the bathroom in about ten minutes, but I think there's something about the room being small and easy to personalize quickly, that makes this a great place to start with.

If you brought any awards or trophies with you, or any other objects that celebrate your accomplishments and make you proud to look at, place those in very public spaces that you will look at every day and be reminded of things that make you happy.

If you have any hobbies you do at home - such as crafts, sewing, designing, etc - make sure that you bring these items with you and allow a space for you to continue those hobbies which are a source of happiness.

The Culture of Boise, Idaho

The culture in Boise has always been one favoring community activities, especially in the downtown area. Throughout the summer, it feels like there is always something going on (because to some degree, there is).

Alive After Five runs every Wednesday from June through September, featuring a concert series of local artists held in the Grove Plaza. Also present at this event are vendor booths and food/drink stands. The Grove Plaza also conveniently features a chlorinated fountain (a very popular attraction for the kids), so you can always cool off if you need to. The best part: it's completely free to get in.

There is also Art in the Park, held in September in Julia Davis Park. Art in the Park features live music, food and drink, and, of course, lots of art. Included is quite a variety of artistic mediums, from painting, drawing, and photography, to such things as blown glass and custom plates.

The Canyon County Fair, held in late July or early August, and the Western Idaho Fair, held mid- to late-August, both feature typical fair attractions - rides and food and such - as well live performances from major rock and country stars. (I've seen Blake Shelton and Eric Church at the Canyon County Fair; you can either watch for free from grandstands way back away from the stage, or spend a modest sum and get up-close seats, which give the performance a much more personal feel).

Once fall hits and football season starts, that's all Boise is about until the season is over. It's our major 'claim to fame', if you will; the BSU Broncos have earned the city some national recognition, which is something that was in thin supply until they defeated Oklahoma in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl. This thrust them into the national spotlight, and ever since then, local support for the Broncos has skyrocketed.

There are a number of other local community events throughout the year, but listed are most of the major ones I can think of. I've always had a great time trying out some of the local culture (I've lived in the area since I was 2, but have only recently begun to attend some of these events, and I can personally recommend all of the ones I listed above, especially the Canyon County Fair concerts and Broncos football games.

How Much Do Piano Movers Charge?

Many people struggle with the question of whether it is worth the cost of hiring piano movers. Often, they don't even explore the option because they assume that the cost will be prohibitive. But if you don't ask, you don't know for sure what the cost will be.

By the pure act of hiring separate movers, there will be an additional charge. But your furniture movers will then not charge you because they won't be dealing with the piano at all. It is the net cost that is the true price of moving the piano.

Depending on where you live, charges will vary based on cost of living, competition, experience, and a whole host of other factors. The best way to get a handle on what piano movers charge in your area is to call around and get a bunch of quotes to compare. You will also want to get a separate quote from your furniture movers for the relocation of the piano. Do not have the price bundled in with the cost of moving the rest of your belongings.

The piano movers in your area will likely quote you an hourly price multiplied by the number of hours estimated to complete the job or they will charge some type of standard fee. In order to give you an accurate quote they may need to come out and see your location and examine your instrument. The destination will also play a factor in the quote. Some moves are more inherently difficult than others. If the terrain (i.e. doorways, entranceways, stairs, etc.) is prohibitive of moving such a large piece of furniture, then costs will go up. The more difficult the move, the more manpower will be required, thus - the more expensive the move.

Distance and storage will also play a part. Are you moving across the country or across town? Will you need to store the piano at a storage facility for a few days before you have access to your new location? Some specialized piano movers also offer temperature controlled storage which is something that you may also want to consider.

Seasons may be another consideration in the cost. If it is a busy time of year for business, piano moving companies have more leverage to charge more.

And you must also consider insurance. Good, reputable piano movers are insured or may charge additional for insurance. It is always better to protect yourself against accidental damages.

In the end it may cost more for specialized piano movers but the peace of mind gained is priceless.

Why Corporate Housing is a Good Option When Moving

St. Louis is a city in Missouri that is famous for its Gateway Arch whose story is related to its nickname, "Gateway to the West", which was first termed by Napoleon Bonaparte during a time when it was still owned by France before being sold to the US in the early 1800s. In the 19th century, immigrants flocked to the city which then made its culture varied, including its cuisine and music. Jazz, blues and ragtime are common in this area, along with visual arts which form a big part of the city. Here, you will see museums, installation arts, and open exhibits all around.

The population of St. Louis is not as big as that of other major cities so you will expect that it's not as hard to find a place to stay or a company to work. To really feel what it's like to be in St. Louis, a single visit may not be enough. So if you are planning to migrate to the city, you're in luck because, unlike New York which is too crowded, St. Louis has just enough population with great job opportunities available.

Finding a home in St Louis depends entirely on your taste but you will find a wide variety of housing options. If you are just starting in your job or career and you want affordable and safe accommodation, it's best to go for St Louis corporate housing. Maybe you'd be asking, "why corporate housing?" The reason is because corporate housing is not only readily available, but also convenient. It's just a walk away from the downtown area. And if you're not a morning person and your work requires you to be up very early in the morning, then you might want to consider living near your office. Corporate housing is the best option for you because it is affordable and very accessible.

Corporate housing is an alternative place to stay besides a hotel if you're staying on a temporary basis. The good thing about these units is, they offer basic household services such as cleaning and maintenance afforded by the corporate housing company so you can be sure your unit will be well-kept and well-maintained. Problems such as plumbing and electricity are not common for corporate houses because routine maintenance is always part of the contract. The other good thing about it is, corporate housing units are fully furnished so you don't have to buy your own furniture. It's like living in a home away from home where it will be just as comfortable for you as you make the necessary adjustments that come with moving.

If you are planning to have an extended stay in St Louis, it would be better if you could research about the right accommodation. There are great St Louis corporate apartment options that are comfortable, safe and affordable for single persons and entire families.

What It's Like to Live in Point Loma, San Diego

Point Loma in San Diego is well-known as the place where the first Europeans, namely the group of Rodriguez Cabrillo, landed in California from their expedition in Mexico. It is a hilly peninsula that shelters SanDiego Bay from the Pacific Ocean which is to the west and south of PointLoma. One other landmark that's usually representative of San Diego can also be found on Point Loma and that is the Old Point Loma Lighthouse, now newly refurbished and partially open to the public.

As this area is one of the seaside communities in San Diego, it is therefore expected that many people will take advantage of the great coastal properties and as such, there are several neighborhoods in PointLoma. Many homeowners have the privilege of having unrestricted views of the Pacific Ocean as they settle on the hilly portions of Point Loma. Others have the luxury of settling near the bay with their own private piers. This area not only affords great views to its residents but also gives them the benefit of being so close to Downtown San Diego itself via North Harbor Drive, the Pacific Highway, Interstate 8 and the SanDiego Freeway.

Though SanDiego is just a short drive away, you hardly need to leave PointLoma at all. It is complete with hotels, retail establishments and educational institutions. You may find these commercial industries in PointLoma Village, Shelter Island, Liberty Station (the newest addition) and the Midway District.

Since this area is practically surrounded by water, there are yachting facilities and marinas for visitors who want to rent boats and for residents who have their own boats. Other support facilities like boat repairs and fishing supplies are also abundant.

The southern end of this area is where you'll find Naval Base Point Loma, Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery and the Cabrillo National Monument.

Team Aguilar is a real estate firm in San Diego County. If you're looking to purchase Point Loma Real Estate please visit their website. They can help you buy or sell if you are thinking of moving or relocating to San Diego County. Point Loma is just one of many areas in San Diego that may be the perfect city for you to relocate to.

Services Offered by Professional Movers

Moving can be hassle. Packing, storing, and transferring belongings can be a lengthy process that always entails the risk of things being lost or damaged. To help alleviate this stress, there are many different companies that offer moving and storage services.

Professional movers offer a variety of different services aside from just transferring belongings from one point to another. Some movers will also pack belongings under the client's direction and move all of the belongings, including large pieces of furniture, into moving trucks. These movers will even provide the boxes, tape, and other materials with which to pack the client's possessions and to ensure that they are well protected.

Not all moving organizations offer the same services, however. Some movers will transfer customers' belongings anywhere in the country, while some only offer services within a specific state. And some movers even offer storage services so that people can store their belongings in a safe unit at their new location until they need them. This is a service particularly sought after by those who have sold their old property but still have not found a new residence in their new location.

And moving organizations are located all over the country. When looking for a reliable mover to help transfer belongings, many people try to find those who offer insurance so that they have a monetary guarantee that their belongings will be handled with care and will arrive safely at their destination.

Although moving can be stressful, professional moving services offer a wide variety of services to help people make the transition to a new location relatively painless.

Storage Pod Costs

A sure way to get your friends to cringe is to ask for help moving your stuff to a new house or a storage unit. What a pain! First you have to rent a truck, round up some willing or not so willing friends, load the truck, drive to the new house or storage unit, unload the truck, return the truck, and then you have to buy everyone dinner. Fortunately with the advent of the storage pod there is an easier way.

A portable storage pod is a portable storage unit so to speak. The company that owns the storage pod will drop off the pod to you at your home. You then fill up the pod with your belongings and the company will come and pick it up from you whenever you are ready. You have the choice now of having the company store your pod at their facilities or they will take it to your new house where you can unload it before they pick up the emptied pod. Almost takes the hassle out of moving and storage doesn't it? But what is the cost?

The cost of a pod will of course vary from company to company, but with each company there are three rules that will apply that will determine how much your storage pod will cost you. The three rules are:

1.    Size: Just like with renting a moving truck or storage unit, the bigger the truck or unit, the bigger the cost. Before you rent your storage pod, you need to first determine how much stuff will go into it. You don't want to rent a pod that can fit all the belongings of a three-bedroom house if you are moving out of a one-bedroom apartment; that's overkill. If you let the storage pod company know exactly what is to be moved they should be able to give you an idea of how big a pod you will need.

2.    Duration: The longer you need to utilize your pod the more it will cost you. If you only need the pod for a couple of days to complete a cross-town move, then you will of course pay less than if you need to store your pod for several months. Some companies even offer specials such as your first month storage for a dollar or even free when certain conditions are met; so don't be afraid to ask if there are any specials that are going on.

3.    Location: Since the storage pod company is footing the bill for the gas to drive your storage pod to and fro, you can bet that the farther they have to drive, the more you will have to pay. If you are moving right around the corner, you won't pay much, but a move from sea to shining sea will ring the bill up in an awful hurry. If you are renting storage space on a monthly basis, then you should use a storage pod company that is in your area as most have the price of delivery and pick up built into the monthly rent.

All the bigger storage pod companies have toll-free numbers that you can call to get a quote of how much you can expect to pay. Knowing first though how big of a storage pod you need, how long you will need it for, and how far the pod will travel is key if you expect to get the most for your money.

You should also use a current pods promo code to save 5-10% off the cost of a Pods portable storage unit.

Relocation Strategies 101 - 8 Tips to Get to Know Your New City

When you move to a new city, one of the most important things to do is get familiar with it.  Once you develop the familiarity, and knowledge of the closest supermarket, shortest way home, and how to get from any one place to another without looking at a map, it goes a long way towards feeling at home in that place. There's something comforting about knowing neighborhood restaurants, and where to go for anything you need, without having to look for directions or ask for a reference.

Here are a few tips and ideas to help you navigate a new city:

1. Get a map and a guide book.  Ideally, do this before you leave.  This way, if you love a particular brand, say Fodor's or Lonely Planet, you are guaranteed to find it in the language you're most comfortable with. Take a look at the local points of interest, areas considered highly touristy (i.e. shopping centers), and parks and monuments.

2. Plot out and points of interest to you on the map.  Using the map with the guide book, you might want to highlight any areas on the map that you want to visit, or consider living close by.  If you are moving someplace with a subway/metro, you may want to try and figure out which stations match up to these points of interest.

3. Seek out people from your host city before you move.  Ask them for any tips about places to see, places to eat, and, especially, any areas considered dangerous. Again, highlight these on your map.

4. Become a regular.  If you find a restaurant, news shop, bookstore, or cafe, for example, that you absolutely love.  Make a point to go there at least a few times a week. Before you know it, the waiters or owner will be asking you how you are, and get into small talk with you.  It's an added bonus to feel recognized in a new city - takes away from that feeling of "anonymity" that can haunt us at the beginning.

5. Bring good shoes.  I know this may sound funny, but if you're moving someplace with lots of cobblestone streets that you plan to walk on, make sure you bring comfortable, flat shoes, with a strong sole.  If you only bring heels, or thin-bottomed shoes, you'll wear through them in a week!

6. Be a Tourist.  Yes, be a tourist with pride!  Dare yourself to take every double-decker bus trip in the city, boat trips, city guided tours.  This is such a great way to learn tips about the city, hot spots, you might not otherwise have found, and, if your tour guide is nice, you could tell them you recently moved to the city, and ask them for local tips on where to eat, drink, shop, etc.

7. Research nearby destinations.  Sometimes, you may want to get out of the city for a break, or change of pace.  Your guide book is one source of easily reachable day trips.  You could also go to the nearest train station and pick up some schedules to see what's within a one-hour train ride, and then research those cities online if your guide book doesn't list them.

8. Connect with nature. Sometimes the best way to "zone out", see how the locals relax, and enjoy some downtime is to go to a nearby park.  See if your guide book mentions any, or this is one of those tips you could ask for, from your tour guide, if you follow tip 6, or a new friend, if you've followed tip 4.

One Mover, Two, Three, Four?

With most reputable moving companies it depends entirely on the size of your move. A smaller move tends to warrant two movers, a medium size move at least three movers with the largest move being at least four movers.

When you call in to schedule an appointment for a moving estimate or obtain a moving quote, your agent will begin by gathering information about your move. A list of things they will ask is listed below:

  • How many bedrooms?

  • What's the square-footage of your home?

  • Do you have any large or fragile items?

  • Is your home one story, two or more?

  • Will you need packing done?

The answers to these questions will help the mover gauge your move size and then devise a move plan that addresses your moving need. The least amount of movers sent will be two. Two movers generally handle one and two bedroom apartments. For larger two bedroom apartments, condos and three bedroom homes, three movers are generally assigned. And lastly for larger three bedroom homes and more you should receive at least four movers and possibly five depending on home size.

I've heard all sorts of horror stories about the amount of movers received for a given move. When you are discussing your move with the agent make sure you find out the number of men and their hourly moving rate. The amount of movers affect the pace of the move. If the moving crew is hindered because a lack of support it will cost you in the end. Also ask if there are any minimums associated with your move. These questions shed light on your anticipated costs.

The size of your moving crew is not picked out of a lottery, but your experienced mover will package the right amount of movers and tools to deliver a move for you that is second to no other moving company.
