What It's Like to Live in Point Loma, San Diego

Point Loma in San Diego is well-known as the place where the first Europeans, namely the group of Rodriguez Cabrillo, landed in California from their expedition in Mexico. It is a hilly peninsula that shelters SanDiego Bay from the Pacific Ocean which is to the west and south of PointLoma. One other landmark that's usually representative of San Diego can also be found on Point Loma and that is the Old Point Loma Lighthouse, now newly refurbished and partially open to the public.

As this area is one of the seaside communities in San Diego, it is therefore expected that many people will take advantage of the great coastal properties and as such, there are several neighborhoods in PointLoma. Many homeowners have the privilege of having unrestricted views of the Pacific Ocean as they settle on the hilly portions of Point Loma. Others have the luxury of settling near the bay with their own private piers. This area not only affords great views to its residents but also gives them the benefit of being so close to Downtown San Diego itself via North Harbor Drive, the Pacific Highway, Interstate 8 and the SanDiego Freeway.

Though SanDiego is just a short drive away, you hardly need to leave PointLoma at all. It is complete with hotels, retail establishments and educational institutions. You may find these commercial industries in PointLoma Village, Shelter Island, Liberty Station (the newest addition) and the Midway District.

Since this area is practically surrounded by water, there are yachting facilities and marinas for visitors who want to rent boats and for residents who have their own boats. Other support facilities like boat repairs and fishing supplies are also abundant.

The southern end of this area is where you'll find Naval Base Point Loma, Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery and the Cabrillo National Monument.
